Cagayan de Oro City once hold the record of the largest solar power plant in the developing nations around the world. The 1 Megawatt Photovoltaic Power Plant built by CEPALCO or the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company is located in Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City. CDOPlaces.com along with the CDOBloggers group visited the place last August 6, 2011 to help promote green energy which Mr. Abaya one of the major owner of CEPALCO is very supportive in sustainable energy.
The plant is composed of 6,500 panels from Sharp Japan which cost 5.3 Million US Dollar at the time of constructions which was partially funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) which was facilitated by the World Bank through the International Finance Corporation.
Solar power equipment cost thru the years and with the technological advances are going down and are now more affordable. By next year CEPALCO is expanding its solar power plant with a new 20 megawatts capacity to be located at the Phivedic Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
