This time the theme of the Photo walk is nature photography; last year it was street photography and we walk around from Gaston Park to Plaza Divisoria. The place this year was at the Manresa Farm in upper Carmen this city.

Manresa Farm is one of the comprehensive farm you can find within the city proper. It is manage by Xavier University where its agriculture studies department do their practice there. The farm is a picturesque location with aged old trees, farm animals and its overlooking the city of Cagayan de Oro.

The Tamparong sisters, the trio behind the fashion brand Spruce, were quite shaken when their mom, Maridel, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Maridel was a healthy, energetic woman who ate right and exercised regularly – it didn’t make sense that she had cancer. The family quickly realized how randomly and mysteriously this disease picks out its victims.

They had time on their side, however. The cancer was detected in the early stages, and treatment was prompt and successful. Maridel Tamparong has been cancer free for three years now. The ordeal has created within the Tamparong women an overflowing sense of gratitude for life, family, and the advances in medical science, which compels them to give back and do their part in the fight against cancer.

A PressCon was recently held today at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club house for the joint forces of The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (Mother Club) and Nissan Pilipinas to a “Golf for a Cause” which will be happening today February 14 until the 17th of February 2013 at the world-class championship Pueblo de Oro Golf Course in Cagayan de Oro City.

“The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (RC CDO), Rotary Foundation and Nissan are coming together to raise funds for a training center for the Indahag Relocation Site which houses 1,700 households displaced by Tropical Storm Sendong,” said Marillo Paano, club president. “With the cooperation of Habitat for Humanity, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the city government and concerned citizens, the center will provide basic technical skills for both men and women to help them seek employment.”

“Nissan Universal Motors Corporation welcomes this opportunity to work alongside the Rotary Club of CDO on this laudable project,” said Honeymae A. Last January 27, 2013 at the Grand Ballroom, Pryce Plaza Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City more than 500 of the country’s top pediatricians gathered for the Vaccine Congress 2013 with its theme: “Evolving Technology. Expanding Coverage. Protecting the Next Generation”.

One of its rallying points is to defeat a winning enemy – the enemy of millions of children worldwide. And the slower our pace, the faster countless more innocent lives will go quitly without protest – falling prey to the enemy’s fatal grip.

The enemy is called the Rotavirus. Worldwide, 4,000 children die every day as it causes diarrhea among children aged less than 5 years old. And in the Philippines, 13 children die every day because of rotavirus related gastroenteritis.

We know the enemy is fatal – but it is not invincible. And we can stop it before it’s too late, if we will only quicken our steps to outrun the enemy. The Vaccine Congress 2013 have discuss best practices and share insights on how they can defeat the disease which is joined by marathon master Coach Rio, who will represent the human race against the dreaded disease.

With the reduction of child mortality as part of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations, saving children from rotavirus related death counts among the most important missions countries must take especially as this disease is highly preventable through vaccination. The World Health Organization’s Stragetic as this disease is highly preventable through vaccination. The World Health Organization’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) recommends that rotavirus vaccines be included in all national immununization programs, particularly in countries where diarrhea related deatch account for more than 10% of deaths in children younger than 5 years.

“By creating venues and channels to discuss how we can effectively defeat the rotavirus, the Philippines will drastically reduce overall child mortality in the Philippines and win the race against this fatal yet highly preventable disease,” notes Dr. Fil Gacheco a ROTAPHIL Representative and Associate Professor at MCU College of Medicine.

Without doubt, we can’t afford to slack off because the faster we act against the rotavirus, the more children we save.
