Ola! Welcome to CDO Gringo

Gringo Tex-Mex Restaurant is now open here in Cagayan de Oro City, located at the 2nd level of SM Downtown Premiere.

It is its the first branch in Mindanao and outside Metro Manila. They serve Tex-Mex cuisine which is a fusion of the United States and Mexican cuisines, deriving from the culinary creations of Tejanos.

You should try their specialty dishes which is the grilled chicken and baby back ribs. Their grilled chicken has 2 variants, the original and southern spice chicken. I like more the southern spice chicken drizzled with their special sauce.

Try also their nachos which have a different distinctive taste with a unique thin style tortilla chips.

Minindal Cuisine – CDO

A quaint restaurant can be found near the Gaston Park in Cagayan de Oro City. You may not notice it immediately as a restaurant when you are outside but it is a cozy little restaurant inside located in the old commercial district of the city.

Minindal is a tagalog term for merienda or snack and these might be what started the place, a merienda place. Inside you will be delighted with the Filipiniana design theme. The owner used to be in the furniture business and that is why you will find beautiful antique furniture pieces.

As a Filipino themed restaurant, the food are mostly Filipino cuisine too like native longganisa, caldereta, ensaladan talong, and many others except for some modern fusion like Chicken Cordon Bleu, Baby Back Ribs and some more. The regular meals range from P150 to P235 with rice and side dish already but the portion is kinda small with it s price. The taste is, I might say just regular not really good.

They also serve snacks like fresh lumpia, halo-halo, pasta sa aligue and many more. We haven’t tried their snacks and we might have not tasted there delicious specialties but over-all the place is nice to unwind and eat on a regular day. They are open from 11am to 2:30pm and 4pm to 9pm, Monday to Saturday.

Flashback at Bigby’s – 16 years in Business

Last friday (September 19, 2014) CDOPlaces.com was invited to the big party at Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant at their branch at the Ayala Centrio Mall. Celebrating its 16th year in business opening its first branch in Cagayan de Oro with just 30 items on the menu. Henrik Kelly Yu, who along with his wife Joanna Cris Yu and friends Catherine Genabe opened their travel-inspired restaurant in their native Cagayan de Oro when they were just 22 years old.

“Anne and I were both Rotary exchange students, and we always went home with new food discoveries.” shares Henrik and through the years and with more travels, inspiring new dishes they have expanded the menu to 68 items now.

In a timely move, Bigby’s will takes their loyal clientele on another trip, time travel to the beginning. They will be bringing back the old favorites that were taken off the menu for one reason or another because customers across the branches have requested for them. Old favorites like Kimmy’s Chunky Stew, which was introduced as a special on the menu for their first Father’s Day treat in 1999, is back in its original form: rice toppings in a bowl! Their popular grilled chicken with Ceasar dressing sandwich, the Chicken Julius, also makes a triumphant return. Their version of tonkatsu, Tsunami Chops, in another one making a comeback, to the delight of loyal customers.

“We’re also celebrating the items that have never been removed from the menu, and are in fact our strongest items,” says Henrik.

Bigby’s signature Sinuglaw ], a contraction of sinugba and kinilaw in ceviche (kinilaw) mixed with grilled (sinugba) pork, done Cagayan de Oro – style with tabon tabon to turn the vinegar into milky white, and a citrus called biasong is literally a winner at the Kumbira Culinary Show against the champions from Luzon and Visayas.

The new look of their new home reflects their personal journey. “When we started, it was all browns and wood, very neutral. Now, we’ve become more vibrant: adding blues, yellows and reds into our interiors” add Henrik.

As Bigby’s now turns 16 years in business they envision to continue and choose your own adventures in its new space and rediscover your own journeys on a plate.

Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant is located at the ground floor of Ayala Centrio Mall and SM City CDO. You can follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/bigbys or their twitter account @Bigbys.
