Places to Explore

If you are new or just visiting the city and your first time to be in St. Agustine Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro there are many places within the Cathedral compound that are worth visiting.

You can find the tomb on the right side entrance of the Cathedral the first Archbishop James Hayes SJ when Cagayan de Oro city became an Archdiocese. Archbishop Hayes is an American priest from New York City who was assigned in Cagayan de Oro seven years after he was ordained in 1921. He established the San Agustin Parochial School now Lourdes College and founded Ateneo de Cagayan now Xavier University. The Cathedral was destroyed during World War 2 and Hayes rebuilt the church in 1946 on Gothic lines and furnishing it with 19th century stained glass windows that was donated by the Sacred Heart Sisters of New York.

On the left side entrance of the Cathedral is where you will find the tomb of Archibishop Patrick Cronin, an Iris priest who was assigned and died here in our city. He succeeded Father James Hayes as Archbishop of the city in 1971. The left side of the Cathedral is also where you will find the rectory and a good view of the Cagayan de Oro river.
